Tiger is Back!

On April 14, 2019, history was made yet again by Tiger Woods.  Tiger won his 5th Master tournament to bring home another Green Jacket.  Throughout the 4 day weekend at Augusta National, Tiger scored a -13.  With scores of 70, 68, 67, and 68 (under 70), Tiger finish one stroke ahead of three players; Xander Schauffele, Brooks Koepka, and Dustin Johnson, all at -12 for the tournament.

After an 11 year gap between major wins, Tiger finally closed the deal at Augusta National for his 15th career major win.  With 3 wins at both The US Open and the British Open, 4 wins at the PGA Championship, and 5 wins at the Masters, Tiger is second for the most major wins ever.  Tiger trails by 3 major wins to Jack Nicklaus, the all-time great.

This year’s Masters tournament featured two partially rainy days, both Friday and Sunday.  Friday, Tiger and several other later groupings were delayed about an hour and a half due to a short rain spout.  On Sunday, unprecedented steps were taken to avoid rain that would come later in the day.  The first groupings of players teed off at 7:20 am, while the last groupings teed off at 9:30 am.  Players on the final day of play were grouped into 3 to save time on the course, which receive backlash from many fans, but was necessary to finish before late day rains.

The atmosphere at this year’s Masters felt different than previous years.  The crowds were larger and louder.  This could have been because the days were nice and people got time off of work, or it was because Tiger Woods was a favorite to win the Masters.  Many agree that it is because of the latter.  Both Saturday and Sunday drew large crowds following Woods throughout the golf course, anticipating his every shot and cheering at every stroke.  This was one of the greatest sights to see and a real honor for one of golf’s all-time greats.

Although there was a delay due to rain, Tiger Woods was still able to receive his fifth Green Jacket on the Clubhouse Terrace.  Presented by last year’s Masters winner Patrick Reed, Woods received yet another Green Jacket with a smile that could not be contained.

Congratulations to one of the best golfers in our lifetimes, Tiger Woods!  Tiger has fought several back fusion surgeries and many off-course conflicts, but has done something that many had sworn would never happen again. Today, Tiger is again a champion.
